How to Upgrade a Cisco Switch IOS via TFTP

Cisco Switch IOS Upgrade Procedures via TFTP
Put the new image in your TFTP server root directory.

1. BACKUP CURRENT CONFIGURATION

sw1#copy running-config tftp:
Address or name of remote host []? <Your TFTP Server IP address>
Destination filename [savant-rfd-sw1-confg]? <Enter>
!!!!! 19909 bytes copied in 0.872 secs (22831 bytes/sec)

2. DELETE OLD IOS IF NOT ENOUGH SPACE ON FLASH

Some switches do not have enough Flash storage space to hold two IOS images, in these cases you must delete existing IOS image from Flash before transferring the new image to the switch, because because if you don’t the TFTP file transfer will fail. If there is enough space to hold both images, then skip to Step 3.

sw1# delete c3560-ipbase-mz.122-25.SEE3/c3560-ipbase-mz.122-25.SEE3.bin

Note: You will need to change the text to delete the image that is on your switch. This removes the image from the flash, but here will still be a directory called in Flash that has the same name as the image, but the image will be gone, leaving you enough space on flash to transfer the new image to the flash.

3. COPY NEW IOS IMAGE FROM TFTP TO FLASH

sw1#copy tftp flash:
Address or name of remote host []? <Your TFTP Server IP address>
Source filename []?c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin
Destination filename [c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin]? <Enter>
Accessing tftp://10.0.0.0/c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin…

Note: You will need to change the input to match what you are wanting to do. Also, the upload process may take a while…

4. AFTER TFTP TRANSFER IS COMPLETE, SET SWITCH TO BOOT TO NEW IMAGE, MUST BE EXACT
sw1(config)#boot system flash:c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin

Note: Change the input to match what you uploaded to Flash. Must be in global config mode. Also, you can have more than one image specified in the boot system config. The system will try to boot to the first in the list, if it can not, it will try the second in the list. It may be helpful if you have both the old and the new image on Flash to specify the old as a fallback.

5. VERIFY NEW BOOT CONFIGURATION

sw1#show boot BOOT path-list : flash:c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin

Note: You need to see EXACTLY the image you uploaded to the Flash on the first line of the results before you reload.

6. COPY RUNNING CONFIGURATION BEFORE RELOAD OR YOUR WILL SWITCH WILL NOT BOOT PROPERLY

sw1#copy running-config startup-config

7. ISSUE RELOAD COMMAND

sw1#reloadProceed with reload? [confirm] <Enter>

8. VERIFY SWITCH BOOTED TO NEW IOS AFTER RELOAD

sw1#show version
...omitted...
System image file is "flash:/c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9/c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin"
...omitted...

9. COPY RUNNING CONFIGURATION TO STARTUP CONFIGURATION

sw1#copy running-config startup-config

GOOD LUCK!!!
